What works best to cut foam? ›

I have had good results making straight cuts in most kinds of foam rubber and memory foam uncompressed using a snap-blade utility knife with a brand new, full-length blade.

You will need to use an electric carving knife or a utility knife to cut the foam. It's important to measure and mark the area you want to cut before you begin to ensure you get an even cut. It's also important to use a sharp blade to avoid tearing or damaging the foam.

Choose the Right Tool: A sharp, serrated bread knife or an electric carving knife works best for this task. Secure the Mattress: Place the mattress on a flat surface. If possible, have another person help you hold it steady. Make the Cut: Using your knife, begin cutting along the marked lines.

Knife edge blades , along with V-Tooth blades, are one of the most common types of blades used in foam cutting operations. Knife Edge blades qualify as slicing blades, which means that they won't remove any material or create dust throughout the entirety of the cut.

Whether you're cutting larger foam insulation sheets down to size or trimming overspray, you'll need a thinner blade. Our 10490 Manual Metal-Handle Utility Knife or our 10491 Auto-Retractable Metal-Handle Utility Knife would work well in this application.

However, using a scissors with foam gets harder the thicker it gets. As such, I recommend using an electric kitchen knife for any foam over 2″ for the most reliable cut.

A toothless blade will minimize cleanup of dust and debris.

The best way to make cleanup easier is to reduce the mess in the first place. I do that by using a jigsaw blade without any teeth. A toothless blade still cuts through the foam like butter, but it leaves a tiny fraction of the mess.

Polyethylene Foam

Since PE foam has a closed-cell structure, you'll need a slightly more aggressive blade to cut through it. We would typically recommend starting with a V-Tooth or C-Tooth bandknife blade , but if you're looking for a cleaner finish on the cut, then a Scallop blade would likely be the way to go.

Serrated blades usually cut more cleanly. Whether cutting soft foam or high-density foam of any thickness, cut only one sheet at a time. It may be tempting to compress several sheets together to get through the job more quickly, but compressing foam changes its shape and can result in errors.
